Classical Music Playlist, August 23, 2023
Haydn’s next to last symphony, No. 103, picked up the nickname the “Drumroll” symphony for the rolling timpani that opens the work. It was the eleventh of twelve symphonies Haydn composed specifically for premiere in London where audiences loved him. To this day it’s one of his most popular symphonies, and we’ll feature the entire symphony No. 103, in a period instrument performance as Haydn would have heard it, for today's Midday Masterpiece.
