Franz Joseph Haydn playing a string quartet
Between 1768 to 1772 Haydn published three sets of string quartets, the Op 9, 17 and 20. He wrote no more quartets until his Op 33 in 1781, and these were more mature, creative and innovative in their design. For example, the inner graceful minuets of the earlier quartets were now replaced with joking scherzo movements, and instead of fugue finales, the Op 33 show a variety of alternatives, among other changes. A couple years before he composed the Op 33 Quartets, a change in Haydn's employment contract with the Esterházy family allowed him to publish his music without prior approval from his employer. So in a letter to potential subscribers of the sheet music, Haydn described his Op 33 Quartets as "written in a new and special way, for I have not composed any for ten years." The Op 33 No. 1, unusually in b-minor, is today's Midday Masterpiece.
