Today would have been Leonard Bernstein's birthday, born August 25th in 1918. We're celebrating with music that he composed or conducted throughout the day. Including the over half-hour opening movement of Gustav Mahler's 3rd Symphony, which he described as the arrival of Spring and the triumphant entry of Summer. It’s such a masterfully self-contained musical statement that we’ll feature just that first movement, conducted by Bernstein, for today’s Midday Masterpiece.
