Richard Strauss at age 36 in early 1901.
Richard Strauss composed his F-minor second symphony between 18 and 20 years old. Its world premiere in New York City in December 1884 was the first work of Richard Strauss ever performed in America. After its European premiere the next year the symphony, and Strauss, were quite in vogue in Germany and put young Strauss on the map. Though he remained proud of it (with later reservations of his youthful inexperience though he continued to conduct the symphony into his later years) he abandoned the symphonic form and moved onto his tone poems such as Don Juan. The early Symphony in F-minor by Richard Strauss is today's Midday Masterpiece.
