Antonín Dvořák (background photo by Michael Browning on Unsplash)
Czech composer Antonín Dvořák arrived in New York in 1892 to be the Director of a new music school and help American composers create a uniquely “American” sounding classical music. He found plenty of unique music here already: African-American spirituals, Native American songs and dances, and even American popular songs such as those by Stephen Foster. He demonstrated how one can synthesize and adapt these into something new by composing his Symphony No. 9 ”From the New World.” It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
