Self-portrait of Louis Spohr
German composer Louis Spohr (1784-1859) wrote over 150 works with opus numbers in different genres, but his nine completed symphonies were the most celebrated. Until Mendelssohn and Schumann, Spohr's symphonies were really the only ones to receive regular performances alongside Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and didn't fade from the concert repertoire until toward the end of the 19th century, especially in London. His first of six visits to England began in early 1820 on a contract to conduct, perform as a solo violinist and to compose new music specifically for the Philharmonic Society. Within about a month of arriving, Spohr composed his Symphony No. 2. Along with his earlier 1811 Symphony No. 1, the two symphonies remained staples in London until the 1870s, with one reviewer in 1842 writing that the second symphony of 1820 was "beyond comparison the most perfect orchestral composition of Spohr." That Symphony No. 2 by Louis Spohr is today's Midday Masterpiece.
