Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg’s Symphony No. 3, titled “West Coast Pictures,” depicts a tiny coastal village on the western shore of an Island in Sweden. Atterberg completed the symphony in 1916 as a unified work that began as three stand-alone musical pictures: Sun-Smoke, Storm, and Summer Night. Take a little trip to Atterberg’s charming Swedish maritime village of a hundred years ago with the “West Coast Pictures” of his Symphony No. 3, today’s Midday Masterpiece.
