Johannes Brahms c 1862 by Carl Anton Schulz
In his mid-20s in the mid-1850s, Johannes Brahms was daunted by the shadow of Beethoven who had died only about 30 years before. Because of this, Brahms resisted composing a symphony until he was 46 when he felt better experienced. He gained some of that orchestral experience by writing other music including his two orchestral Serenades. The Brahms Serenade No. 1, completed in 1858 at age 25, is today's Midday Masterpiece.
