Mozart had a pet bird that he taught to sing the opening melody of the final movement of his Piano Concerto No. 17. He had the starling for three years and when it died, Mozart actually gave it a proper funeral in the garden with a burial and gravestone which was all documented by friends in attendance. The bird is long gone but we still have Mozart’s tuneful and lighthearted Piano Concerto No. 17, today’s Midday Masterpiece.
