George Walker in the 1940s | photo: Wikipedia
American composer George Walker (1922-2018) graduated high school at age 14, went on to study at Oberlin College, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia (becoming its first black graduate in 1945), then studied at the American Academy in Fontainebleau in Paris. After this, he was the first Black recipient of a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music in 1957, and in that same year he returned to Paris on a Fulbright Scholarship to study composition with Nadia Boulanger. He became the first Black tenured faculty member at Smith College in 1961 as well as the recipient of fellowships, other university faculty positions, six honorary doctorates and the Pulitzer Prize in 1996.
But it was in 1946 that Walker finished his first major composition, his String Quartet No. 1 "Lyric," today’s Midday Masterpiece.
