Composer Charles Stanford circa 1894
Born in Dublin, Irish composer Charles Stanford (1852-1924) was appointed professor of composition at London's Royal College of Music in 1883 and in 1887 was elected chair of music at Cambridge University. A composer of church music and cantatas, stage works and song, chamber and orchestral music, his influence on English musical life was enormous. He composed his Symphony No. 4 in 1888 for a concert program of all his own works presented in Berlin. Stanford’s Symphony No. 4 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
