Jules Massenet (1842-1912)
French composer Jules Massenet completed his only piano concerto in 1902. Perhaps because he was nearing 60, as was its dedicatee and soloist at the premiere, the music (and the playing, notably in at least one review) was seen as aging and the concerto fell into obscurity after the composer's death in 1912. But thankfully, today, we appreciate older forms and styles and don't need our music always to be 'contemporary.' With that in mind, with all its charms of the Parisian Belle Époque, the Massenet Piano Concerto is today's Midday Masterpiece.
