Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Robert Schumann was unusual in the method of his compositional output. Before 1840 he composed mostly for piano. In 1840 (the year he married Clara) he turned to song and produced about 120 vocal pieces. In 1841 he wrote two symphonies. 1842 was his year of chamber music when he wrote three string quartets, a piano quintet and a piano quartet. That Piano Quartet in E-flat is today's Midday Masterpiece.
