After working for the Esterhazy family for nearly 30 years, they increased his pension but dismissed the entire music staff. Left with nothing much to do, Haydn accepted a commission from London for 12 new symphonies so lucrative he earned more for those new works than he did in 30 years working for the Esterhazy family. His time in London was the high point of his career: he was an international star and London audiences loved him. The final of his twelve “London” symphonies, and his final symphony ever, Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
