Ignaz Moscheles in about 1820
Composer and pianist Ignaz Moscheles was born in Prague in 1794, studied in Vienna, and in 1826 settled in London where he stayed for 20 years. In 1846 Felix Mendelssohn (to whom Moscheles had given piano lessons in 1824) invited him to become piano teacher at the recently founded Leipzig Conservatorium. Moscheles taught there to the end of his life (1870). During his youth in the early 1800s, the piano was the new sensation with parents wanting their children to learn it, manufacturers in rivalry over their own modifications, and piano concertos the vehicle to make pianist-composers famous. In this time (about 1820), Moscheles composed his Piano Concerto No. 3 that features the classicism of Mozart but originality of the day. It's today's Midday Masterpiece.
