Danish composer Niels Gade circa 1850
Niels Gade (1817-1890) was the most prominent musician in Denmark during his lifetime. Much of his early music incorporated Danish folk elements, but from about the 1840s when he went to Leipzig and became a colleague and friend of Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann he left behind the “folk” idiom. In this more “neutral” manner Gade composed only one violin concerto, in 1880, and dedicated it to the leading violinist of the day, Joseph Joachim, who premiered it in 1881. You’ll hear Sweden’s Malmö Symphony perform it, with that Orchestra’s late Concertmaster, Anton Kontra as the soloist, for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
