Johannes Brahms famously took over 20 years to write his first symphony, but it took him less than 1 year to write his last symphony, conducting the premiere himself in 1885. It is a wonderful summary of everything that made Brahms so famous and cemented his place as one of the great composers: beautiful melodies, the full spectrum of emotions, deep seriousness, enough joy to require a triangle player, and being both innovative and old-fashioned enough to use a Baroque dance form as the finale to his final symphony.
The passacaglia is set of continuous variations played on top of a repeated bass line or chord progression. It originated in the 1600s in Spain, had its heyday in the Baroque era, and all but vanished by 1800. You can hear Brahms's passacaglia and along with the rest of his epic Symphony No. 4 as your Midday Masterpiece here on CapRadio at 2:00pm.
