Ernő Dohnányi | photo: Library of Congress
Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnányi (1877-1960) was also a pianist considered at the time to be the successor to Franz Liszt. Besides his extensive international performing career, he was a busy conductor, piano teacher, and was essentially in charge of the Budapest Academy of Music. His early music was championed by Brahms, he was friends with Bartók and taught conductor Georg Solti. He was also the grandfather of conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi. Having grown up with the sound of the cello always present from his amateur cellist father, “speaking” the language of the instrument came naturally to him. The 1904 Concertpiece for Cello and Orchestra by Ernst von Dohnányi is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
