Joaquín Rodrigo in 1960 | photo by Juan Gyenes
In writing a concerto for two guitar soloists in 1966, Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo (1902-1999) took an old anonymous madrigal and put it through variations of different styles of Spanish music such as the Girardilla, Fandango and Zapateado. Guitarist brothers Pepe and Angel Romero gave the premiere in 1970 and you’ll hear their 1974 recording of Rodrigo’s “Concierto Madrigal” for today’s Midday Masterpiece as we celebrate Joaquin Rodrigo’s birthday today.
