English composer Ernest John (EJ) Moeran (1894-1950) married the Irish cellist Peers Coetmore in 1945. That same year, Moeran composed his heartfelt Cello Concerto for her to play exclusively. He wrote, "I would not allow anyone else to play it and I will not, while it is still under my control." With its tender adagio as the emotional heart of the work, the concerto was to be their own; a union of composer and performer. E. J. Moeran's 1945 Cello Concerto is today's Midday Masterpiece.
