Composed in 1902 during Finland’s struggle for independence against Tsarist Russia, and with its folk themes and distinctly national flavor, the 2nd Symphony of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius was immediately lauded as a nationalist statement - by SOME; others denied it, including Sibelius. But nearly everyone agrees that it’s a masterpiece. As we celebrate his 1865 birthday today, the Sibelius Symphony No. 2 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
