Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) in 1894.
Johannes Brahms had retired from composing when the virtuosity of a particular clarinetist inspired him to come out of retirement and write a Clarinet Trio, Quintet, and Two Sonatas for this musician. The Sonatas would be his final chamber music compositions and his last multi-movement works of any kind. Composed at the height of his powers in the twilight of his life, the autumnal sounding Brahms Clarinet Sonata No. 1 from 1894 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
