The Annunciation to the Shepherds by Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem (1620–1683)
Antonio Vivaldi wrote at least three settings of the hymn Gloria in excelsis Deo ("Glory to God in the highest"), the words that the angels first sang when announcing the birth of Christ to shepherds in Luke 2:14. Vivaldi's most celebrated setting (RV 589) was written about 1715 but was unknown for over 200 years until it was performed in 1939. Vivaldi's "Gloria" is today's Midday Masterpiece.
