The 1857 Violin Concerto No. 2 by legendary violinist, composer and teacher Joseph Joachim was hugely popular during his lifetime and won high praise for the composition though some say he wasn't even the best interpreter of his own Concerto. In fact, he stopped playing it in his later years due to its length and difficulty. Contemporary American violinist Rachel Barton Pine says that practicing it is like "training to run a marathon." She plays it for today's Midday Masterpiece.
