Born in Prague in 1770 and raised solely by his mother who had no interest in educating him, Anton Reicha ran away from home at age 10 to his paternal uncle who raised and educated him in music. By 20 he was at the University of Bonn where Beethoven was a fellow student in the same classes and a fellow musician in a local orchestra. After stays in other countries he eventually settled in Paris where he would make significant advances in wind music and composition theory. Among his students at the Paris Conservatory were Hector Berlioz, César Franck, Charles Gounod, Henri Vieuxtemps, and Franz Liszt. Unfortunately, Reicha was reluctant to publish his music so upon his death in 1836 he and his music were soon forgotten despite having composed significant works including over ten symphonies. From his last days in Vienna in 1808, Anton Reicha’s Symphony #3 is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
