"Macbeth apercevant le spectre de Banco" by Théodore Chassériau [1854]
Beethoven’s "Ghost" Piano Trio earned its nickname for its slow and dark middle movement. While the title appears to have originated with a description of the music by Beethoven’s student, Carl Czerny, the actual ghostly music may have had its origin in Beethoven’s ideas for an opera on Shakespeare’s Macbeth that he was contemplating at the time. Beethoven’s notebook sketches for the ghostly second movement contain a reference to Macbeth. Beethoven’s “Ghost” Trio is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
