Composer Reinhold Glière was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, on this date in 1875. He spent much of his professional musical life navigating the dangerous political currents of early 20th century Soviet Russia, successfully avoiding trouble and earning Soviet awards. Born in Kyiv, Glière first studied at the Kiev [Kyiv] school of music. He would go on to study violin, composition and conducting and became Director of the Kiev [Kyiv] Conservatory in 1914, then professor at the Moscow Conservatory in 1920 until 1941. Along the way he incorporated into his compositions musical traditions of the many Soviet Republics, earning favor from Soviet authorities for writing music that would appeal to people within the diverse USSR. His last orchestral composition was a Horn Concerto in 1952 and it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
