Danish composer Asger Hamerik (1843-1923)
Danish composer Asger Hamerik (1843-1923) had a successful career as a composer but not in his native Denmark. As a young man he studied with famous Danish composers (Gade, Hartmann) then continued his studies in Germany with Hans von Bülow and in Paris where he studied with Berlioz. Then for 27 years from 1871 to 1898 he was director of the Peabody Institute in Baltimore for whose orchestra he composed several of his seven symphonies (usually during summer vacations in Nova Scotia). His fourth, titled "Symphonie Majestueuse" from 1889, was his most performed in Denmark. It's today's Midday Masterpiece.
