Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837)
Pianist and composer Johann Hummel (1778-1837) was a child prodigy taught for two years for free by Mozart and later by Haydn, and later still was friends with Beethoven and Schubert and remained respected throughout his life. Socially, he created one of the first pension funds for musicians and performed benefit concerts when the retirement fund ran low. He was also one of the first to advocate for musical copyright protections against piracy. Featuring British pianist Sir Stephen Hough, Hummel’s 1816 Piano Concerto No. 2 is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
