As a teenager, Franz Schubert tried writing no fewer than 12 string quartets for a private circle of friends and family. But he couldn’t produce a masterpiece and remained unsatisfied with his work, hitting a creative wall. He didn’t even finish the 12th quartet (now known as the Quartettsatz), abandoning the genre entirely to focus on other projects.
Four years later, an older and wiser (but still only 24-year-old) Franz Schubert returned and composed a masterpiece. The only one of his quartets published in his short lifetime, the String Quartet No. 13 “Rosamunde” is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00pm.
