Edvard Grieg has turned out to be Norway’s most famous composer, but when he heard the first symphony of his fellow countryman Johan Svendsen, Grieg proclaimed “Svendsen has precisely all that which I don't have: mastery of the orchestra and its large classical forms.” Grieg didn’t stop there – he withdrew his own symphony and wrote on the cover “MUST NEVER BE PERFORMED”.
Svendsen only got better at it. His Second Symphony is filled with all sorts of Norwegian charm, and it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
