The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa oki nami ura) by Hokusai.
Since childhood Claude Debussy had a fascination with the sea. For his three symphonic sketches collectively titled “La Mer” [The Sea], he took inspiration from literature and art including the iconic woodblock print from about 1830 by Japanese artist Hokusai, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” which Debussy requested to be printed on the cover of the published music and which he had a framed print of in his home. Debussy’s impressionistic evocation of the sea at different times of day, including the waves and their interaction of the wind, “La Mer,” is today’s today's Midday Masterpiece.
