Sergei Prokofiev | Color by Klimbim (Olga Shirnina) who grants free use.
After Stalin’s cultural police banned Prokofiev’s 6th symphony as decadent, he wrote his 7th Symphony for Soviet Children’s Radio hoping it would be perceived as acceptable and awarded a hefty financial state prize. But now being older (in fact this was his final major composition), ill, and financially ruined by Soviet rejections, he composed his 7th Symphony in C-sharp-minor which tempers any intended fairy tale effervescence with a shadowy sense of melancholy. And for the premiere he added a more cheerful ending which, he begged a friend, he hoped would never live on after his death. He did not win the state prize and the original ending of the symphony presages his own death a year later with a “ticking down” rhythm like an unwinding clock that eventually just stops. This original ending of the Prokofiev Symphony No. 7 is heard in today’s Midday Masterpiece.
