Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Robert Schumann sketched the outline of his Symphony No. 2 within two weeks, but it took him almost a year to fill in the details (orchestration, etc). Bouts of depression, ringing in his ears and other emotional and physical ailments caused the delay. Schumann admitted as much in correspondence, confessing that the symphony could be interpreted as a musical autobiography. “I wrote the C major Symphony in December 1845 while I was still half sick, and it seems to me that one can hear this in the music. Although I began to feel like myself while working on the last movement, I recovered totally only after completing the entire piece." His description of the symphony as "music of light and shade, sunshine and shadow" is heard in its alternating moods and victorious finale. The Symphony No. 2 by Robert Schumann is today's Midday Masterpiece.
