Pianist Yuja Wang and Composer-Conductor Teddy Abrams | photo: Louisville Orchestra
Pianist Yuja Wang, and Berkeley-born composer and conductor Teddy Abrams, both just won the Grammy for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for their performance of his 2021 Piano Concerto.
Born in Berkeley in 1987 and a member of the San Francisco Youth Symphony for seven seasons and a protégé of Michael Tilson Thomas from the age of eleven, since 2014 Abrams has been Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra whom he conducts on the Grammy winning recording.
By dividing the concerto into eleven sections, including a swing-style big band overture, Latin jazz-inspired "solos" and passages reminiscent of boogie-woogie, American gospel songs and Broadway showstoppers, Abrams sees his concerto as "an opportunity for the piano to take us through what I think is one of the strengths of American culture: its plurality, its interconnectedness." The Grammy-winning performance of his Piano Concerto is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
