As with most Haydn symphonies, the title “La Passione” (The Passion) of his Symphony No. 49 in F-minor from 1768 did not originate with him. There is some evidence that Haydn may have composed the music originally for a stage play about a Quaker from 1764 that was popular in Vienna in the late 1760s and early 1770s. The association with Easter in the title may have come from its single performance during Holy Week 1790 in a northern German city. The slow-movement opening, the persistent minor-key throughout and the symphony’s somber tone have helped to give the title permanence. Haydn’s Symphony No. 49 “La Passione” is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
