Seiji Ozawa | photo: Columbia Artists Management Inc
Conductor Seiji Ozawa passed away last week at the age of 88. He was Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra until 2002. He took that position nearly 30 years earlier in 1973, coming from the San Francisco Symphony where he was Music Director from 1970 until 1977 and leading both orchestras simultaneously for a few years. In San Francisco he founded the Symphony Chorus after using university choruses for many years. He maintained ties to music organizations in Japan and China and was the recipient of numerous awards around the world.
Seiji Ozawa was born in China in 1935 and died February 6th at his home in Tokyo.
Though French composer Francis Poulenc was raised in a devout Catholic family, it wasn't until the untimely death of two friends later in his life that he found his spirituality reawakened. Following that, he composed a series of sacred works including his "Stabat Mater" in 1950 and "Gloria" in 1959, about four years before his own passing in 1963. Poulenc's "Gloria" is today's Midday Masterpiece with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa.
