Today in 1797 was the birthday of Henry Steinway, founder of Steinway & Sons Pianos. 100 years later, in 1897, the ten year old piano prodigy Arthur Rubinstein was sent to Berlin to study music under the general supervision of legendary violinist-conductor Joseph Joachim who was a great friend and collaborator of Johannes Brahms. This established for Rubinstein a lifelong connection to the music of the great German composer. Rubinstein later became a Steinway artist which meant he performed and recorded on Steinway pianos. All these come together as Rubenstein plays a Steinway in a 1954 recording of the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 for today's Midday Masterpiece.
