Czech composer Antonín Dvořák
Derived originally from a Ukrainian musical form, in the compositions of Czech composer Antonín Dvořák the "dumka" or plural "dumky" refers to music with sudden mood changes from melancholy to cheerfulness. Dumky appear in each movement of his six-movement Piano Trio No. 4, titled the “Dumky” Trio. For this piece, Dvořák eschewed formal structure in favor of a more free-form fantasia that allowed him to let the music soar unfettered into brooding and lighthearted territories. The Trio was so successful that Dvořák performed it on a 40-concert farewell tour throughout his homeland before heading to New York City to teach for a few years. Dvořák’s “Dumky” Piano Trio is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
