Austrian violinist, pianist, composer and conductor Franz Clement and Beethoven were close friends. At the April 1805 concert at which Beethoven conducted the premiere of his “Eroica” Symphony, Clement also performed his Violin Concerto in D (one of six he is known to have composed). Clement would also commission Beethoven’s iconic Violin Concerto for himself to premiere (and did in 1806). Such was their friendship that even as Beethoven was on his deathbed in 1827, Clement visited him to offer support in his last days. Clement’s Violin Concerto in D (that premiered with Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony) is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
