Tchaikovsky’s first ballet was Swan Lake which premiered in 1877 and was met with lukewarm praise at best. Reports from the time blamed the terrible choreography but Tchaikovsky blamed himself and intended to re-write the music AND create a suite, neither of which he ever did. After his death, masterpiece productions elevated the ballet and others assembled suites of the music.
Former San Francisco Ballet Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer (from to 1985-2022), Helgi Tomasson, describes Swan Lake as “ballet at its most beautiful” and "the most well-known ballet of all the full-lengths, and probably the most universally loved." Of course much of the reason for that is the music. By the way, in 1940, the San Francisco Ballet was the first ballet company in America to stage a complete production of "Swan Lake."
Assembled after his death, Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake Suite" is today's Midday Masterpiece.
