American composer Caroline Shaw's 2019 oratorio "The Listeners" is about mankind's eternal contemplation of the cosmos; from gazing at the stars, to actual exploration of space. It's today's Midday Masterpiece as we highlight Shaw for Women's History Month.
- Caroline Shaw (born 1982) moves among roles, genres, and mediums, often working in collaboration with others as producer, composer, violinist and vocalist.
- Shaw is the recipient of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music, several Grammy awards, an honorary doctorate from Yale, and a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship.
- She has written over 100 works in the last decade for Anne Sofie von Otter, Yo Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, LA Philharmonic, Philharmonia Baroque, Seattle Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony and many others.
- Recent projects include music for films, theater, ballet, concert works, two albums as well as occasional chamber music appearances as a violist.
- Her work as vocalist or composer has appeared in several films, TV series, and podcasts including Beyonce’s Homecoming, the movie Tár, Dolly Parton’s America and more.
