That a second symphony by Sergei Rachmaninoff even exists is fortunate. Following a scathing review of his First Symphony in 1897 he fell into such debilitating depression that he was unable to compose for three years. But after help from a psychiatrist in early 1900 he emerged and composed his wildly successful Piano Concerto No. 2. Despite its success, Rachmaninoff still questioned his ability as a symphonist. He composed smaller works and accepted conducting positions. Amid the turmoil of revolution rising in Russia, he quit his posts and left Russia for Dresden where he began work on his second symphony. Premiered in early 1908, his Symphony No. 2 received praise and a major Russian award and restored his confidence. To celebrate his 151st birthday today, the entire 55-minute Symphony No. 2 by Rachmaninoff is today's Midday Masterpiece.
