Composer & Pianist John Field (1782-1837)
Irish-born pianist and composer (and teacher) John Field is credited with inventing the nocturne. Often for his piano concertos he would write two new movements and insert one of his nocturnes as a slow middle movement. For his piano concerto No. 7 he did something slightly different. The concerto is in two movements but included WITHIN the first is a slow section that was also published separately as his Nocturne No. 12 in G major. Field premiered the Concerto No. 7 on Christmas Day 1832 in Paris with Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin in the audience on whom his nocturnes were influential. Field's Piano Concerto No. 7 is today's Midday Masterpiece.
