Beethoven (c. 1815) by Joseph Willibrord Mähler
Beethoven’s two premiere performances of his “Archduke” Piano Trio marked his last public appearances as a pianist. Written accounts bear witness to how his piano playing was compromised by his near total deafness. Composer Louis Spohr described that he pounded on the keys much too hard in some passages, and in softer passages was unintelligible. "On account of his deafness there was scarcely anything left of the virtuosity of the artist which had formerly been so greatly admired." Sympathy and understanding were Beethoven's receipts, and the music was highly praised. The Trio is noted for its originality, nobility and grandeur. Nicknamed for his greatest patron and student to whom Beethoven dedicated the work, Archduke Rudolph, the “Archduke” Piano Trio in B-Flat Major is today's Midday Masterpiece.
