Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927)
Eventually known as one of Sweden’s greatest pianists, in his professional debut season Wilhelm Stenhammar performed the monumental 4-movement Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1. The next year (1893) Stenhammar composed his own monumental 4-movement Piano Concerto No. 1 at age 23 and performed it with great success for about 15 years before he composed his Concerto No. 2 (which he didn’t perform as much because he had turned his career focus to conducting). That 45-minute Piano Concerto No. 1 by Wilhelm Stenhammar is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
