Paul Hindemith (1895-1963)
In 1940 Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) began a project on a request from choreographer Léonide Massine for a new ballet based on the music of Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826). After artistic disagreements, the ballet project was abandoned and Hindemith shelved the music. He returned to the project a few years later but as a symphonic suite that he ultimately titled "Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber" and it remains one of Hindemith’s most popular works. It's today's Midday Masterpiece.
