Classical Music Playlist, April 30, 2024
Of his six string quintets, it seems that, twice, Mozart wrote two pairs of string quintets (always with a second viola) after writing sets of string quartets. Speculation why typically includes his desire to explore further complexity than quartets. In any case, one of these pairs of quintets (K. 515 and K. 516) was produced after he wrote the six quartets he dedicated to Haydn. One from this pair, his K. 515 String Quintet No. 3, is today's Midday Masterpiece.
