Vienna was beleaguered by battles with Napoleon and Beethoven described the “cannons and misery all around.” In late 1813, Beethoven premiered his 7th symphony in Vienna as a benefit for soldiers injured in a recent battle and audiences responded enthusiastically. With altruism and philanthropy in the air on this Big Day of Giving, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is today’s Midday Masterpiece.
