Classical Music Playlist, May 3, 2024
At around age 20, Swiss-born composer Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) began to ponder questions of spirituality and religion, national ethnic identity and his Judaic heritage, all with the additional motivation of expressing these in his music. In the 1910s he composed what became known as his “Jewish Cycle” of works. His final work in the cycle, that uses the Hebrew name for King Solomon, “Schelomo, Hebraic Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra,” premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on this date, May 3rd, in 1917. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece.
